Asafa Powell hits back at critics following Olympic performance

Despite the unprecedented success of our growing sprint legends during these Olympic games in London, it appears that the failure of another Jamaican athlete has somewhat overshadowed the achievements accomplished by the island’s track stars in recent days.

Former world-record holding sprinter, Asafa Powell has taken loads of criticism from fans after pulling up during the highly anticipated 100m final on Sunday. Despite the fact that fellow sprint superstars, Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake won gold and silver in the event respectively, giving Jamaica 1-2 in an Olympic 100m final for the second straight summer games, most of the talk surrounded Powell and his unfortunate set of circumstances during the final, when he injured his groin and finished last in the event.

Since Sunday’s race, much ire has been directed towards Powell, with many fans expressing their frustration on social media; pointing to his past shortcomings in major events as they lashed out against the man who was once branded ‘Afasa.’ Some fans later speculated that Powell faked the injury while others insisted that he’s chock full of excuses.

Once comment read, "Nothing is wrong with people being themselves but to create constant excuses is not a good thing for anyone. I think in Jamaica we have something called the Asafa syndrome, this is when someone gives a lot of excuses for failing instead of just accepting that you have failed."
However, Powell shot back at his critics on Monday night, intimating that he cannot control fate while advising detractors not to attack his loyal fans.

Powell commented on his official Facebook page, “I ask one thing of all the persons who are making negative remarks about me. I can understand that and appreciate the fact that you expected me to medal, however I have zero control over destiny. I do ask one thing though please do not come on my page and disrespect my loyal and genuine fans who support my cause and justify my existence. Enjoy the rest of the day. One Love 4Life!”

Several teammates have offered words of encouragement Powell following his injury, with Usain Bolt tweeting, “Hope u get well soon. You started this Jamaican take over.”
Asafa Powell will not be able to participate in the 4 by 100m relays for Jamaica this weekend and has undergone an MRI which revealed new damage to his adductor muscles as well as scar tissue from an old injury.
